AC Transit Site Selected as Most Desirable

In April 2004, EYSAC selected the AC Transit site alternative as the location that best achieves the vision of the Emeryville Center of Community Life. This site includes the existing AC Transit bus maintenance facility, combined with parcels along the western San Pablo Avenue frontage, the closure of 47th Street and the existing Emery Secondary School facility. When combined, the site encompasses approximately 10 acres between San Pablo Avenue, Doyle Street, 53rd Street and 45th Street.

Refining the AC Transit Site alternative

Since April 2004 EYSAC has been working on refining the AC Transit alternative. While the original alternatives assumed all new construction, EYSAC began to consider opportunities to rehabilitate and reuse some of the existing AC Transit facilities for the Emeryville Center of Community Life. While the feasibility of this approach is still uncertain, it does present potential opportunities for cost savings.

A space program analysis was completed in July 2004. This analysis identifies the amount of space needed for each function from the original space program and where it might be located, either in reused space or in new space. Based on this, two slightly different AC Transit site alternatives were prepared:

  • Scenario A-1, which uses the entire San Pablo Avenue frontage next to AC Transit for the ECCL and relocates the Armstrong/commercial facility one block north, and
  • Scenario A-2, which keeps the Armstrong/commercial facility in its current location.
